South Zanesville Fire Department is located in South Zanesville, Muskingum County, Ohio. Currently the department protects roughly 20 square miles and 8,000 citizens. The department is the primary emergency response for the Village of South Zanesville and Springfield Township.
South Zanesville Fire Department has officially been serving the community since 1924, however; the department existed as an unofficial volunteer group long before then. In 1924 the department was incorporated as South Zanesville Volunteer Fire Department, Inc. Eventually, the department merged with the Village of South Zanesville and became a municipal fire department as it is today.
In the early years of the department, it served a broad area of Muskingum County. During this time many of the township fire departments that exist today didn’t. SZFD is believed to be one of the oldest departments in the county, and has responded to many of the biggest fires in the region. The department has a proud and rich history. The department was operating an emergency squad that provided oxygen and transport long before EMS became standard. In the 70’s the department became one of the first departments in the county to be equipped with full ALS ambulances. South Zanesville Fire Department today operates an ALS ambulance.
It is the departments goal to be one of the most progressive, if not the most progressive, fire department in Muskingum County. We are constantly looking for ways to improve the service we provide our community.
