10/10/2025 10:06 p.m.
Muskingum County Sheriff Matt Lutz has placed Muskingum County under a Level 1 snow emergency. A Level 1 snow emergency means roadways are hazardous with blowing and/or drifting snow and may be icy. Motorists are urged to drive cautiously.
The South Zanesville Fire Department urges everyone to take necessary precautions to stay safe during this winter storm. Below are 5 tips for staying safe both at home and on the road:
While Driving
1. Slow Down: Allow extra time to reach your destination and reduce your speed on icy or snowy roads.
2. Increase Following Distance: Maintain at least three car lengths between you and the vehicle ahead to allow for extra stopping time.
3. Prepare Your Vehicle: Ensure tires are properly inflated, your gas tank is full, and emergency supplies (like blankets, water, and a flashlight) are in your car.
4. Avoid Sudden Movements: Gentle braking, turning, and accelerating can prevent skidding on slippery surfaces.
5. Stay Alert: Avoid distractions, and if conditions worsen, consider delaying non-essential travel.
At Home
1. Prevent Carbon Monoxide Poisoning: Never use generators or grills indoors, and make sure your CO detectors are functioning.
2. Keep Walkways Clear: Shovel snow and spread salt or sand to prevent slips and falls.
3. Stay Warm Safely: If using space heaters, keep them at least 3 feet away from flammable objects and never leave them unattended.
4. Be Prepared for Outages: Have flashlights, batteries, and enough food and water to last at least 72 hours.
5. Check on Neighbors: Particularly the elderly or those with medical needs, to ensure their safety and well-being.
Stay informed and report any snow or ice accumulations directly to the National Weather Service by calling 412-262-1988 or posting on their Facebook or Twitter (@NWSPittsburgh). For emergencies, always dial 911.
